چکیده

The physical parameters of jets are still poorly understood. Here we present long slit spectra of the molecular hydrogen emission from the jet powered by the young stellar object in L483, from which we obtain details of the jet structure and shock velocities. The jet has a knotty structure, and, in addition, weaker emission is seen between the knots, so that emission is observed along the full length of the jet. The H 2 emission from the bright bow shock at the end of the jet has an excitation temperature of 2200 K, and is consistent with a bow C–shock of speed 40–45 km s −1. Lower speed J–shocks, which could also match the H 2 emission, are ruled out by a lower limit on the shock speed provided by an analysis of the CO emission from the outflow. Assuming a jet velocity of ∼ 200 km s −1 , this shock velocity indicates that the jet from L483 has a density of about 10 times less that the medium into which it is propagating. The H 2 knots are possibly due to jet instabilities, or could be indicative of episodic activity. Emission from between the knots could be indicative of a partially molecular jet, entrainment in a mixing layer, or unresolved sub-knots. These possibilities, and how they impact on outflow models, are discussed.

A ballistic bow shock model for jet-driven protostellar outflow shells

We analyze the dynamics of the shell produced when a bow shock from a collimated jet propagates into the surrounding medium. Under interstellar conditions, the shock is radiative, and a ballistic approximation for the shell flow is appropriate beyond the working surface where the jet impacts its surroundings. The solution is then determined by the ambient and jet densities and velocities and by...

The H 2 velocity structure of inner knots in HH 212 : asymmetries and rotation ⋆

High-resolution R∼50 000 long-slit spectroscopy of the inner knots of the highly symmetrical protostellar outflow HH 212 was obtained in the 1-0 S(1) line of H2 at 2.12 μm with a spatial resolution of ∼ 0. 45. At the resulting velocity resolution of ∼ 6 km s−1, multiple slit oriented observations of the northern first knot NK1 clearly show double-peaked line profiles consistent with either a ra...

We present a proper motion study of the shock waves within the classic stellar jet HH 47 based on Hubble Space Telescope Hα and [S II] images of the region taken over two epochs. Individual knots within the jet and in the bow shock/Mach disk working surface of HH 47A move significantly in the five years that separate the images, and the excellent spatial resolution of HST makes it possible to m...

Emission from Bow Shocks of Beamed Gamma-Ray Bursts

Beamed γ-ray burst (GRB) sources produce a bow shock in their gaseous environment. The emitted flux from this bow shock may dominate over the direct emission from the jet for lines of sight which are outside the angular radius of the jet emission, Θb. The event rate for these lines of sight is increased by a factor of ∼ 260(Θb/5◦)−2. For typical GRB parameters, we find that the bow shock emissi...
